Healthy and Easy Baked Apple Cinnamon Donuts
Gluten-free, Dairy-Free, Refined Sugar-Free, Vegan
If you are anything like my midwest family, the weekends always consisted of donuts! Whether it was after those Fall Saturday soccer games or early Sunday mornings at church, these fried sugary treats became a part of our weekly routine. If you love donuts like us but your body doesn’t agree with all the terrible, unhealthy ingredients – this recipe is for you and is featured in our Childhood Desserts Reimagined Recipe E-book! We’ve created a baked, gluten free, dairy free, refined sugar free version of our favorite fall donuts, and we think you will love them as much as we do!
There is just something about those fall cool mornings that leave you wanting all things apple and cinnamon, anyone with me?! I remember in my teens my mom would make homemade donuts fried in crisco. I would invite friends over for a sleepover and we always looked forward to the smell of donuts as we woke up. They were a sleepover classic and all my friends were excited to indulge! Unashamed, I easily remember throwing 10 donuts down those fall mornings and feeling so sick into the evening because of the fried grease and heavy sugar in my full belly.
Years later I discovered it was the fried foods and refined sugar that caused a lot of the digestive misery I experienced on a daily basis. I became determined to make a healthier version of this classic breakfast treat. We reimagined this recipe to be baked, not fried with clean ingredients that satisfy without leaving you sick to your stomach.
Don’t want to invest in a donut pan? No problem! Turn this easy recipe into muffins. You may just need to adjust the cooking time a bit, so stay close to the oven while baking.
